Eligibility

To be eligible to participate, a student must:

• be from a group traditionally underrepresented in the law;
• receive their college degree by the beginning of the summer program;
• have been accepted by or have an application pending at a New York law school; and
• plan to attend law school in New York or be a New York State resident

Financial Assistance

The NY LEO Program is provided free of charge to participants. Covered expenses include:

The LSAC Prelaw Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) Program is a unique immersive learning experience specifically aimed at undergraduate students from minoritized groups that are underrepresented in the legal profession. Each year, several member law schools host PLUS Programs and we are pleased to announce that our host law schools are currently accepting applications for their 2023 programs.  

The PLUS Program helps participants explore their interest in law, understand the skills needed to succeed in law school, gain insights on the legal profession and future career options, and learn more about navigating the law school admission process. Participants also build confidence and community through supportive networking and mentoring relationships with diverse legal professionals, faculty, and peers as they engage in a program that specifically acknowledges and addresses the challenges faced by minoritized students on the path to law school.

There is no cost to apply or to attend the program if selected. We invite you to learn more about the PLUS Program and this year’s host law schools. For more information, students can attend a webinar on Tuesday, February 28, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET, which will provide program details as well as insights from a panel of PLUS alumni. Students can register for the webinar with their LawHub account.

Summer Pre-Law Pipeline Program

The New York Law School (NYLS) Summer Pre-Law Program is designed to provide students from underrepresented communities with a dedicated set of opportunities to explore the law and create a pathway to earn their J.D. degree at NYLS.The Summer Pre-Law Program is open to rising college juniors who study in the New York City metropolitan area, or elsewhere in New York, and participants will attend courses at NYLS for two consecutive summers. We work directly with undergraduate partner institutions to identify candidates, so we encourage you to pass along this information to interested students and those eager to pursue a career in the legal field. The program runs for four weeks the summer before students’ junior year and four weeks the summer before students’ senior year. As part of the program, NYLS also checks in with participating students throughout their junior and senior years and provides them with law school-related resources.This year’s program begins on June 5, 2023 and ends on June 29, 2023. The curriculum, which includes four hours of class per day, four days a week, was developed and is taught by NYLS faculty members. It includes these topics: Is Studying Law for You?Developing Characteristics of the Successful Law StudentDeveloping Law School Thinking Skills:Thinking about meaningReading for comprehensionPutting your thoughts into words with precisionReasoning by syllogismReasoning by analogyIntroduction to Legal MethodWritten Legal CommunicationProfessional DevelopmentProject-Based CapstonePreparing for the LSAT The Project-Based Capstone represents the culmination of students’ work during each summer session and will engage students in simulated arguments on behalf of a “client.” This year’s program will be taught in a hybrid virtual and in-person format, and the schedule will be as follows: Week 1: June 5–8 (in-person) Week 2: June 12–15 (virtual) Week 3: June 19–22 (virtual) Week 4: June 26–29 (in-person) The deadline to apply is Friday, March 10, 2023. Chicago-Kent College of Law at Illinois Tech is sponsoring a resident Prelaw Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) Program fromSunday, June 4 through Friday, June 23, 2023. We hope you will share information about our program with students who might be interested in going to law school. Currently, the program is scheduled to take place in person. However, we will continue to monitor the CDC guidelines and adjust our program if it becomes necessary to ensure the safety of all involved. 

PLUS offers a unique and unforgettable experience for college students who are interested in the legal profession. This rigorous three-week program is designed to prepare students for law school or a career in the legal profession by helping them to develop essential core competencies needed to succeed in these areas. The program targets undergraduate college students from groups that are underrepresented in the legal profession. 

The PLUS program is a free, three-week summer program that will: 

• provide participants with a deeper understanding of legal education via the program’s rigorous doctrinal and experiential skills-based curriculum;
• help participants develop essential core competencies needed to succeed in the law school application and admissions process, as well as insight into navigating the process; and
• expose students to a wide range of career paths and professionals within the legal profession.

The workshop will be conducted by Dorothy Moneymaker, a veteran TestMasters instructor with an official LSAT score of 175 and over 20 years of LSAT teaching experience. Attendees will be challenged with a series of difficult LSAT questions and Dorothy will demonstrate the most effective methods for tackling them.

Greetings and Happy New Year from Boston University School of Law! We are excited to announce that in summer 2023, under the LSAC Prelaw Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) Program, we will again host the BU Summer Prelaw Academy (BU-SPLA), a residential four-week program focused on countering structural and environmental forces that unevenly tax students of color and first-generation college students. The program intentionally addresses the challenges faced by minoritized students who are underrepresented in the legal profession. Boston University School of Law is proud to continue to be a part of this exciting and innovative program. Our 2022 program was an enormous success, and we are incredibly excited to host a new cohort of students in 2023. BU-SPLA will expose students to foundational law school coursework, critical race theory, and experiential learning. Student will also learn about the law school admissions process and be mentored while working on a personal statement, a diversity statement, and a resume. And of course, students will enjoy social outings in Boston and the opportunity to build community with their peers. BU Law faculty and staff will come together to welcome, teach, and support BU-SPLA students and offer a glimpse into what it is like to be a student at BU Law. BU-SPLA will take place here at BU Law’s modern, spacious law complex from June 6–30, 2023.
