In response to this dramatic change, Staten Island Legal Services (SILS) opened its doors in 2004 to serve Staten Island residents and to fight poverty and seek racial, social, and economic justice.
With over 30 dedicated and highly-trained staff, SILS assists approximately 7,500 low-income individuals and families a year in preventing evictions and foreclosure, preserving affordable housing and homeownership, obtaining access to education, supporting survivors of domestic violence, assisting applicants for immigration status, and engaging in LGBTQ/HIV+ advocacy. In working closely with the communities we serve, our staff regularly conducts outreach and community education and builds relationships with community leaders and organizers, to achieve holistic solutions for our clients.

ABOUT ROBERT J. SCAMARDELLA
Robert J. Scamardella is a life-long Staten Islander who graduated magna cum laude from the College of Staten Island in 1972 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. In 1975, he earned his Law Degree from Brooklyn Law School. He started his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney with the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office where he was the Chief of the Major Offense Bureau. Mr. Scamardella is an experienced Trial Attorney having litigated numerous Estate, Real Estate and Business Matters. He has particular experience in Will Contest, Breach of Contract and Business Owner Disputes. He also has extensive knowledge in Will Probate and Administration Matters, Business Formation, Business Owner Agreements, Residential and Commercial Real Estate Transactions, Elder Care Law and Estate Tax Planning. He oversees the Law Firm of Scamardella, Kasegrande, and Gervasi, and its Associates, while interacting with clients to address their personal needs. Mr. Scamardella has served on the Board of Directors of the Richmond County Bar Association and has chaired its Public Relations and Fee Arbitration Committees. In addition, Mr. Scamardella has served as Board Chairman of the Staten Island YMCA and the Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. He currently sits on the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Greater New York and is a former Board Member of the College of Staten Island Foundation.

This is a paid leadership position, and all interested students must have completed at least 12 credits, have less than 90 credits, and have a 3.0 GPA or higher. We are looking for enthusiastic and outgoing individuals who are passionate about CSI. Serious applicants must be available late afternoons/early evenings and occasional weekends. They must also be comfortable with conducting walking tours for large groups of prospective students and parents, and other stakeholders. This is a great opportunity to develop skills for their future career goals.
