The New York Law School (NYLS) Summer Pre-Law Program is designed to provide students from underrepresented communities with a dedicated set of opportunities to explore the law and create a pathway to earn their J.D. degree at NYLS.
Participants in the Summer Pre-Law Program attend courses at NYLS for two consecutive summers. The program is open to rising college juniors who study in the New York City metropolitan area, or elsewhere in New York State. NYLS works directly with undergraduate partner institutions to identify candidates, and the inaugural class included approximately 25 students. Please pass along this information to your students.
This program runs for four weeks the summer before students’ junior year and four weeks the summer before students’ senior year. As part of the program, NYLS checks in with participating students throughout their junior and senior years and provides them with law school-related resources.
This year’s program will start on June 5, 2023 and end on June 29, 2023.
The curriculum, which includes four hours of class per day, four days a week, was developed and is taught by NYLS’ faculty. It includes these topics:
Is Studying Law for You?
Developing Characteristics of the Successful Law Student
Developing Law School Thinking Skills:
Thinking about meaning
Reading for comprehension
Putting your thoughts into words with precision
Reasoning by syllogism
Reasoning by analogy
Introduction to Legal Method
Written Legal Communication
Preparing for the LSAT
The Project-Based Capstone represents the culmination of students’ work during each summer session and will engage students in simulated arguments on behalf of a “client.”
The summer Pre-Law Pipeline program will be hybrid, and the schedule will be as follows:
Week 1 – June 5 – 8 (in-person)
Week 2 – June 12 – 15 (remote)
Week 3 – June 19 – 22 (remote)
Week 4 – June 26 – 29 (in-person)
The deadline to apply to our pre-law pipeline program is Friday, March 10, 2023.
Application decisions will be communicated to each applicant no later than April 8, 2023.
